What is Carrd?

Carrd is a no-code website builder built exclusively for one-page sites. You pick a template, customise it with a drag-and-drop editor, connect a domain, and publish. The entire process takes under an hour for most people, and under 20 minutes if you have a clear idea of what you want.

Unlike Wix or Squarespace, Carrd never tried to be everything. It focuses on one format, does it well, and charges almost nothing for the privilege. That constraint is actually its biggest strength. By keeping the scope tight, the product stays fast, intuitive, and approachable for people who have never touched a website builder before.

The platform powers personal portfolio pages, startup landing pages, link-in-bio hubs, event pages, waitlists, product launches, and digital business cards. If you need more than a single focused web presence, you will eventually outgrow it. But for a surprisingly large share of use cases, one well-designed page is exactly enough.

Who built it, and why it matters

Carrd was created in 2016 by a pseudonymous indie developer known only as AJ (@ajlkn). AJ had previously built HTML5 UP, a free HTML template site that attracted a large following, and Pixelarity, a paid template marketplace. Carrd started as a side project to explore what a simple, opinionated site builder could look like.

The indie origins matter for a few reasons. Carrd was never designed by committee or engineered to satisfy enterprise requirements. Every decision reflects the taste and constraints of a solo developer who needed to keep things manageable. That philosophy is still visible in the product today: no bloat, no upsells, no dark patterns.

AJ bootstrapped the product to over $1 million in annual recurring revenue with just two people before eventually raising a small seed round. Today Carrd operates at over $100,000 in monthly recurring revenue with a minimal team, making it one of the most capital-efficient consumer SaaS products around.

Features breakdown

Carrd's feature set is deliberately narrow.

Editor: The drag-and-drop interface is genuinely simple. Most users figure out the layout system within 10 minutes. You add elements (text, images, buttons, videos, forms, embeds, containers) to a canvas and reposition them by dragging. The editor is not as flexible as Webflow's, but that is not the goal — it is fast, predictable, and forgiving of mistakes.

Responsive design: Every Carrd site is mobile-responsive out of the box. The platform adjusts layouts to fit screens automatically, and Pro users can fine-tune how elements appear on mobile separately from desktop.

Embeds: The embed system is Carrd's most underrated feature. You can embed almost any third-party widget, Stripe payment form, Gumroad product, Typeform, Calendly, or custom HTML block. This dramatically extends what a one-page site can do without Carrd needing to build native integrations.

Forms: Pro Standard and above include native form support with email notifications. You can connect directly to Mailchimp, ConvertKit, and most major email platforms.

Integrations

Carrd's native integration list is modest, but the embed system significantly extends the platform's reach.

Email marketing: Mailchimp, ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign, MailerLite, EmailOctopus, and most other major email platforms connect via native form integration or embed. Subscriber data flows directly into your lists without manual import.

Payments: Stripe and PayPal connect through embedded forms. Stripe in particular is straightforward to set up on a Pro Standard plan. For selling digital products, Gumroad embeds work well as an alternative.

Analytics: Google Analytics connects natively on Pro Standard and above. You paste your measurement ID into the site settings and tracking activates automatically across all page sections.

Automation: Zapier and Make (formerly Integromat) are supported on Pro Standard and above, enabling form submissions to trigger workflows in other tools.

Final verdict

Carrd is the best tool on the market for quickly launching a clean, professional one-page web presence at minimal cost. The $19 per year Pro Standard plan removes almost every reason to use anything more expensive for simple landing pages, portfolios, and link pages.

The limitations are real but clearly communicated. If you know you need blogging, multi-page architecture, complex e-commerce, or heavy SEO, Carrd should not be your long-term choice. But for the specific job of putting a focused, fast-loading page on a custom domain, nothing else competes with Carrd's combination of price and simplicity.

For founders validating an idea, freelancers building a portfolio, creators setting up a landing page, or anyone who needs a professional online presence without months of setup overhead, Carrd is the most efficient path to published.
