The world's most used AI tool. Draft, research, analyse, code, and build Custom GPTs — all in one interface.
Updated June 2026
ChatGPT is an AI assistant built by OpenAI. You type a question, give it a task, or hand it a document, and it responds with generated text, code, analysis, images, or step-by-step plans. It runs in a browser, on mobile, and through an API that developers use to embed it into their own products.
At its core, ChatGPT is a large language model interface. You are interacting with one of OpenAI's GPT models, which have been trained on enormous volumes of text and fine-tuned with human feedback to be helpful, safe, and conversational. The current flagship model, GPT-5, is significantly more capable than the GPT-3.5 that launched the product in late 2022.
What makes ChatGPT more than a chatbot in 2025 is the layer of tools built on top of the core model: web browsing with real citations, a code interpreter that runs Python in a sandbox, image generation via DALL-E, document analysis, voice mode, an agentic operator that can control a browser, and the ability to build and share Custom GPTs without writing code. It is less a single product and more a platform.
ChatGPT reached 1 million users within five days of launching in November 2022 and 100 million monthly users in two months — the fastest consumer application to that milestone in history.
OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit AI safety research lab. Its early work was largely academic, but a series of increasingly powerful language models drew commercial attention. The pivot to a capped-profit model in 2019 brought in significant investment from Microsoft.
Key milestones: ChatGPT Plus launched at $20/month in February 2023. GPT-4 arrived in March 2023, significantly improving reasoning and accuracy. Custom GPTs launched in November 2023. GPT-4o arrived in May 2024 with native multimodal capabilities. Deep Research launched in February 2025 using o3 to autonomously research topics over 10-20 minutes. GPT-5 was released in mid-2025, completing ChatGPT's transformation into a full agentic platform with Canvas, Projects, and Operator.
ChatGPT is no longer a single-purpose chatbot. Key capabilities as of 2025:
Core conversation (Free): The base text interface with GPT-4o-mini on free and GPT-5 with rate limits on Plus.
Web browsing (Free): Real-time web search with clickable citations. More thorough than a Google search for synthesis tasks.
Image generation via DALL-E (Plus): Generate images from text prompts for thumbnail drafts, social assets, and concept mockups.
Data analysis (Plus): Upload spreadsheets and CSVs. ChatGPT runs Python in a sandbox to generate charts, summaries, and statistical analysis. No coding required.
Custom GPTs (Plus): Build a specialised GPT trained on your documents, with a custom system prompt and API connections. Share privately or publish to the GPT Store. No coding needed.
Canvas (Plus): A side-by-side editing workspace for documents and code. Highlight sections, give targeted instructions, and iterate without regenerating the whole output.
Projects (Plus): Persistent workspaces that maintain memory and uploaded files across multiple sessions.
Deep Research (Plus, limited): An autonomous research agent that spends 10-20 minutes reading multiple web sources and produces a structured, cited report.
Operator (Pro only): Hands control of a browser to ChatGPT. It navigates pages, fills forms, and completes multi-step tasks autonomously.
ChatGPT is general purpose, which means the ceiling on use cases is essentially your imagination. Highest-leverage applications for people building and running businesses:
Research: Deep Research mode pulls together cited reports on competitors, market size, industry trends, and customer pain points. Hours of desk research compressed to 20 minutes.
Content production: Blog posts, email sequences, LinkedIn threads, YouTube scripts, landing page copy, and ad creative. Build a Custom GPT with your brand voice loaded in to remove inconsistency.
User interview synthesis: Paste in transcripts from customer interviews. ChatGPT identifies recurring themes, unmet needs, and objection patterns far faster than manual analysis.
No-code automation logic: Generate the Zapier, Make, or n8n logic for automations in plain language. Debug error messages. Write custom JavaScript for tools like Webflow or Airtable.
Data analysis: Upload your P&L, revenue spreadsheet, or churn data. Ask ChatGPT to summarise trends, generate charts, or flag anomalies. No formulas or SQL required.
SOP and documentation: Describe a process verbally or in rough notes and ask ChatGPT to produce a structured, formatted SOP for onboarding, delegation, and team handoffs.
Custom GPT internal tools: Build a Custom GPT that acts as your brand copywriter, customer support first responder, or sales objection handler — with your own materials as the knowledge base.

Pro
Team
Yes. The free tier provides access to GPT-4o-mini with rate limits, basic web browsing, 5 Deep Research queries per month, and file uploads. It is genuinely useful for moderate use. The limitations appear during peak hours and on features like image generation, advanced voice, and Custom GPT building, which require Plus.
GPT-5 is OpenAI's standard conversational model, optimised for speed, fluency, and general helpfulness. The o3 family are reasoning models that think through problems step-by-step before responding. They are slower but significantly better at complex logic, mathematics, and code debugging. Plus users get limited access to both; Pro users get unlimited.
Custom GPTs let you build specialised AI assistants without any coding: a custom system prompt, uploaded knowledge base, and optional API connections. For generating actual app interfaces, Canvas can produce code that runs in a browser. ChatGPT pairs well with no-code platforms like Bubble, Webflow, or Glide that can take generated code and turn it into live applications.
By default on free and Plus plans, OpenAI may use your conversations to improve its models. You can disable this in Settings > Data Controls. Team and Enterprise plans explicitly exclude conversations from training. For sensitive work involving client data or proprietary processes, the Team plan's privacy controls are worth the additional cost.
Deep Research produces significantly more thorough and better-cited output than a standard web search. However, it still hallucinates occasionally and can miss recent or niche sources. The citations are real links worth checking. It is best treated as a strong first draft of research that still needs a human review pass, especially for statistics, legal claims, or named factual assertions.
Plus at $20/month covers the vast majority of use cases: GPT-5 access, image generation, Custom GPTs, Deep Research, Canvas, Projects, and memory. Pro at $200/month is worth it if you need unlimited access to reasoning models, more than 25 Deep Research queries per month, or Operator browser automation. Most founders are well served by Plus.
ChatGPT tends to produce clean, structured, well-organised prose that is reliable but can feel generic. Claude is generally preferred for work where voice, nuance, and a less formulaic tone matter. For tasks like marketing copy or thought leadership, many writers prefer Claude's output with less editing required. For research-heavy tasks, Custom GPT workflows, and data analysis, ChatGPT's deeper toolset gives it an advantage.
