Semrush

All-in-one platform for SEO, AI search visibility and competitor research

About Semrush

## What is Semrush? Semrush is an online visibility platform that covers SEO, AI search, content, local listings, advertising and social media. It started as an SEO and competitor research tool and has grown into a set of toolkits you can buy on their own or together. Its pricing page now leads with combined "SEO + AI Search" plans, which shows how much search has shifted toward AI assistants. For NCF readers, Semrush is the all-in-one option: keyword research, site audits, rank tracking and competitor traffic data in one place, with extra toolkits for ads, local SEO and social if you need them. It has a free plan and a seven-day trial on paid plans, so it is easier to test than most suites in this category. The tradeoff is cost and complexity. There are a lot of menus, and the price climbs quickly as you add toolkits and users. The typical NCF use case looks like this: you have launched a product, a directory or an agency site, and you want to know which searches could bring you customers, who already ranks for them, and what is stopping your own pages from ranking. Semrush answers all three from one dashboard. It also helps with the newer question of whether AI assistants mention you at all when someone asks for a tool like yours. ## Key features **Keyword research.** Keyword reports show search volume, difficulty, intent and related terms, and you can group keywords by topic. That helps when planning tool pages, landing pages or blog clusters. **Competitor and traffic research.** Enter a domain to see its organic keywords, top pages, backlinks and estimated traffic. The Traffic & Market toolkit goes further into a competitor's audience and channels, which is useful for founders sizing up a market before they build. **Site Audit.** Crawls your site for technical SEO issues such as broken links, slow pages, missing tags and crawl errors, then gives you a health score. Handy for checking a new Webflow, Framer or WordPress build before launch. **Position tracking.** Tracks daily rankings for a list of keywords. Plans range from 500 tracked keywords on the SEO and Starter plans to 1,500 on Pro+. **AI visibility.** The SEO + AI Search plans include daily prompt tracking and AI visibility reports that show how your brand appears in AI-generated answers. **Extra toolkits.** Local, Content, Social, Advertising and AI PR toolkits are sold separately, along with third-party apps in the Semrush App Center. ## Best for - **Marketing agencies** that manage SEO, ads and local listings for several clients and want one login for all of it. - **Founders and small teams** who want to try SEO research on the free plan before paying. - **Content marketers** who plan topic clusters and track rankings across many pages. - **Local service businesses** and the agencies that serve them, through the Local toolkit. It is less suited to solo builders who only need the odd keyword check. The free plan or Google Search Console will usually cover that. A good rule of thumb: if you would not open it at least once a week, the paid plans are hard to justify. ## Pricing Semrush's pricing page lists: - **Free:** $0, no credit card. 1 demo project and 10 reports a day. - **SEO:** $139/month, or $117.33/month billed annually. 5 websites, 500 keywords tracked daily. - **Starter (SEO + AI Search):** $199/month, or $165.17/month annually. Adds 50 AI prompts tracked a day. - **Pro+ (SEO + AI Search):** $299/month, or $248.17/month annually. 15 websites, 1,500 keywords, historical data. - **Advanced:** Custom pricing, with team users and API access. Extra users start at $45 a month. Paid plans include a seven-day free trial. Other toolkits are priced separately. ## Pros and cons **Pros** - Covers SEO, AI search, content, local, ads and social in one platform. - A real free plan and a seven-day trial make it easy to test. - Strong competitor and market research for sizing up a niche. - Annual billing saves up to 17%. - A large ecosystem of apps and integrations. **Cons** - Expensive once you add toolkits and users. - The interface is dense, with a steep learning curve. - Separately sold toolkits make the true cost harder to predict. - Traffic and keyword numbers are estimates, not your real data. - More than most solo builders need. ## Verdict Semrush is a good pick if you want one platform for most of your marketing research and you are willing to learn it. Agencies get the most value, since one subscription can cover SEO, ads and local work across clients. Founders should start on the free plan or the trial, then decide whether the $139 SEO plan earns its keep. If you mostly care about backlinks and competitor SEO, compare Ahrefs side by side before you commit. Whichever you choose, keep Google Search Console connected, since it is the only source of your real click and impression data.
